Esther, Jamaica Plains, Massachusetts
I am a second grade teacher at a Quaker School in Massachusetts. I study African American History with my students by looking at the connections between West Africa and African American communities in this country. I received a grant from my school to participate in the Crossing Cultures Senegal Program to further my knowledge and understanding of West African culture.
The trip was a life changing experience. I was able to meet and speak with so many people in Senegal. I learned first hand about projects in economic development, human rights, health care and education. Families welcomed me into their daily routine and shared their home, food, experiences, and humor with me. I was able to ask questions and share about my experiences as a teacher living in the United States. I formed relationships with people in Senegal which have continued to this day. My students will be writing to students in a Senegalese village this week.
